Ödön Márffy was one of the foremost artists working in the early 20th century. While staying in Paris he came across the new paintings of Matisse, Cézanne, which inspired his artistic approach.
On his return to Hungary he became involved in the fine art life of the country and was one of the founders of the modernist artist grouping, the Eights, and New Association of Artists (KÚT) formed in 1924. Márffy (1878-1959) enjoyed close friendship with the famous intellectuals and artists of the day.
In 1920 he married Csinszka, the widow of the nation’s greatest poet, Ady Endre. Márffy’s portraits of her radiate a true lyrical beauty. His oeuvre spanned several periods but throughout these changes of style he was always characterized by a sensitive use of colours, a modern approach, French elegance and rich style of painting.
The exhibition traces the lifework of Márffy through more than 100 works including portraits, landscapes, water scenes, interiors and views of the circus world.
