The main purpose of the UMZE Chamber Ensemble formed in 1996 at the initiative of Zoltán Rácz is – working as a formation with flexible composition – the performance of contemporary and 20th-21st century works, keeping them on the programme, and revealing to audiences the very latest works by contemporary Hungarian and foreign composers.
The objective is to revive the 1911 initiative of the three Hungarian music giants Bartók, Kodály and Weiner, an initiative that collapsed soon after its formation. The society attached to the chamber ensemble launched the Hommage à Ligeti concert in 2006 with the intention of establishing a tradition. The date in May was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the composer. The concept of the series now in its fourth year is to perform all the compositions ever written by Ligeti, who died in 2006.
Works performed during the evening: György Ligeti: Lontano (1967); Trio for violin, horn and piano (1982); Nonsense madrigals (1988-1993); San Francisco Polyphony (1973-74).
